Letters off the Page was a design installation by the Khatt Foundation focusing on the role of Arabic typography in contemporary design and visual culture from the Arab world. Rejecting the ubiquitous idea of adorning clothing with text, Millia Maroun instead chose to create garments from the letters themselves, cutting the naturally sensual forms of Arabic calligraphy from stretchy black material. Sewn together like words on a page, the fabric clings to the curves of the wearer, taking on a voluptuous human form.  The work is thus at once an homage to the importance of the word in Arab-Muslim culture and a playfully provocative challenge to the rejection of the figurative in Islamic art.
